Kenilworth is the first planned community in Asheville and was lead by North Carolina's first ever female mayor, Leah Chiles. In fact the lake was originally named in her honor, as is one of the nearby parks.
Today most refer to it as Lake Kenilworth. Ms. Chile fought for Kenilworth to remain separate from Asheville until 1929, when all the residents could vote on it. There are Historic markers and landmark locations throughout Kenilworth. The winding roads and parks all add to the charm of this very special community.
Legend has it that the (man made) lake was originally supposed to be a golf course! However the lake was created, and water supplied by the Ross Creek to the north. The Dam, located at the south end of the lake, spills over into a continuation of Ross Creek, below. ( see photos and videos) This ingenious design helps to prevent flooding at the lakeshore. Another legend, is that the roads were designed by the path that the horses (and buggies) wanted to travel through the community!
